Afranio Peixoto - Haikus

The river flowing
My eyes are following it
And I follow them…

Afrânio Peixoto first encountered haiku in Paris on a study trip: their brevity, their sense of the fleeting immediately reminded him of his beloved native Brazilian trova form. His first four haiku in 1919 were in fact in the preface to his anthology of 1,000 trova. In his 1931 collection Beads, he returned to the form, writing an explanatory essay to accompany a cycle of 52 haiku. Both sets of haiku are included in this collection, in their first complete English translation.
