CARD GAME REINVENTIONS

A game is a formalised play involving a set of rules and a standardised apparatus. So what happens when the apparatus changes? New rules have to be made, new conventions adopted, and new strategies conceived.

15 card packs 1: The Revolutionary pack

When the republican pack of cards was released in the time of revolution, the standardised suits were replaced with Grapes, Wheat, Hammers and Cocks, in four colours. The notion of the court card, however, remained, replaced with heroes and goddesses.

The Flowerdew Press revives the set and rather than having court cards, extends the four suits to 15 cards.

Play games like pontoon where 21 can be made by 10+11, 12+9, 13+8...

15 card packs 2: Linnet

A new version of the 1910 game of Hindooly, numbered 1-15 in suits of Thorns, Tiles, Finials and Irons.

The four suit symbols are unusual in that they are all fully rotational, and the pack is notable for an exquisite pip layout,

15 card packs 3: Rowley

The transitional pack of cards made by Rowley in the early 19th century features the emergence of the English card suits from the earlier French ones. The clubs are still green clovers, the diamonds are golden, the hearts are a feature of cups, and the spades are still spears.

Rather than recreate the indistinct court cards of the original set, the Flowerdew Press has created a 15-card-per-suit numbered set, using the pip layout of the Linnet set.
