A LITTLE ABOUT US

Literature lost and found again, literature translated

We are a small imprint publishing translated poetry and artists' books, as well as collected works by once lost authors.

Why The Flowerdew Press? Once there was a local bookshop called Mostly Books which sold antiquarian books and curios that surprised and delighted its customers. It was run by a certain Mr Flowerdew, late of Soho, who brought a flavour of his Portobello Road stall to the familiar streets of our town.

He loved livres de peintres, illustrated books where the images and poetry complemented each other. He would lament that his command of French was not up to reading, and he longed for a pair of magic spectacles that would let him read the original and understand the poetry in the words as in the pictures.

Consequently, we specialise in mimotypes -  translated books that replicate the typography and layout of the original to present an Anglophone reading of it. This conveys a sense of what it feels like to be reading the original, and also the excitement of reading those books when they were new.
